What is the opportunity?
The purpose of the Director - Group Strategy role is to drive the development and implementation of the Group’s strategy, incorporating all elements of research, diagnostic, design, build, monitoring and execution.
You will work closely and collaboratively with Business Unit leaders, the Enterprise Portfolio Office, Human Resources, Finance, and the Change Enablement team. This is a highly visible and impactful leadership role in the Bank of Ireland Group, requiring regular engagement with the Group Executive Committee.
In this role, you will:
- Lead or input into the design, development and execution of the overall Group Strategy and cross-divisional initiatives in partnership with the Senior Management of the Group
- Work closely with the Corporate Finance team to develop opportunities for inorganic growth and partnership
- Interpret, analyse, and challenge financial information to determine sound investment decisions that will enable the Group to make commercially informed strategic decisions to support growth and maximise shareholder value, within agreed risk appetites
- Act as a key advisor to the Board and Group Executive Committee advising on industry developments, emerging themes and competitive activity including the potential impacts of same for the Group
- Provide strategic thought leadership to influence business strategies and evolve / adjust enterprise strategy / operational plan by constantly remaining alert and forward-thinking about opportunities and risks in the industry; keep up to date with external business and industry experts regarding likely future developments across the industry and beyond
- Apply rigorous strategic thinking and quantitative analysis to develop and test growth opportunities
- Lead or participate in regular strategy planning exercises including corporate strategy planning, budgeting process, and investor and Board reporting
- Lead periodic ad-hoc strategy reviews on key business issues, iterating and validating the business imperative for the organisation
- Ensure, in collaboration with Group Strategic Reporting, that appropriate metrics are in place to measure performance and progress against strategic goals and ensure that strategic actions are completed at various levels to achieve desired results, Objectives and Key Results etc.
- Lead or co-ordinate cross functional teams in addition to external advisers (strategy, investment bank, legal) to deliver high quality outcomes for the Group
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships across a senior and diverse stakeholder grouping including the Group Executive Committee and Senior Leadership across the Group, Business Unit Heads, Finance, People Services, Enterprise Portfolio Office, and the Change Enablement team, together with external stakeholders including the advisory community and industry and professional networks
- Build and maintain relationships with investment banks and management consultants to ensure awareness of opportunities for the Group as well as market developments, evolving trends etc
- Lead and deliver other key projects as requested by the Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer and deputies when required.
What will make you stand out?
- Expert strategy consulting experience as part of a diversified Financial Services background
- Experience in leadership positions within either a blue-chip consulting firm, a corporate finance provider or a well-developed in-house corporate strategy group
- Experience working in the context of a large complex organisation, developing strong organisational relationships, and leading through influence are key to success
- Strong track record of success in leading strategy formulation with expertise in regulatory developments and experience dealing with regulatory and government bodies
- Impactful leadership presence; credible, confident and inspiring when presenting and communicating with internal and external stakeholders
- Excellent presentation, communication, and quantitative skills
- Ability to form strong relationships and build coalitions

The Group Strategy & Development team is responsible for the development of the Bank of Ireland Group Strategy for Board approval, including the setting of Group strategic direction, portfolio shape and corporate strategy. In addition to strategy development, GSD play a key role in providing strategic thought leadership on critical issues and facilitation of high-quality GEC and Board strategic dialogue.
GSD works collaboratively across the Group to ensure that Group strategic objectives and direction are clear and understood and to promote joined up thinking and alignment at a Divisional and Functional level. GSD also have an important oversight role on delivery of the strategy through tracking and reporting on key imperatives and OKRs.
