Integration of our three core values into our employment processes and frameworks allows Elgin to recognise and respect individual employees for their personal contributions to their roles, their colleagues, stakeholders, and ultimately to the renewable energy sector. We see sustainability as every employee’s responsibility and weaving sustainable practices into our values is paramount to the culture we seek to create.
The role:
Elgin is seeking a Senior BESS Engineer to join our engineering team. This individual will play a pivotal role in the technical assessment of designs, leading optimisation efforts, and supporting the expansion of our PV and storage portfolio. As a Senior BESS Engineer, you will collaborate closely with Project Engineers and Project Managers during the project delivery phase while providing critical engineering support to the Construction, Pre-Construction, and Development teams.
The role involves defining and regularly updating Employer’s Requirements (ERs) for BESS projects to ensure consistency and quality across the portfolio. You will be responsible for keeping senior management informed of key engineering decisions and driving continuous improvements in design and engineering practices. A significant aspect of the role includes evaluating emerging technologies and innovative designs, positioning yourself as a subject matter expert in BESS engineering. Additionally, you will prepare and review technical documentation to support procurement processes across various projects.
Hands-on experience in electrical design and fieldwork is essential, along with expertise in designing BESS systems. You must have a comprehensive understanding of key electrical equipment for BESS plants and an appreciation for the constructability of different designs. The role requires collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders, including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors such as EPC, EBOP, and ICP partners, to ensure effective communication and successful project execution.
What you will do:
- Act as a key technical member of a cross-functional team focused on evaluating, defining, and executing cutting-edge battery storage opportunities.
- Apply electrical and power systems expertise to identify and drive innovative solutions for large-scale utility projects.
- Provide BESS design input for conceptual design studies, feasibility studies, and technical due diligence assessments for co-located and standalone BESS projects.
- Review and evaluate single-line diagrams, communication wiring diagrams, BESS system layouts, and other electrical designs to ensure compliance with standards and project requirements.
- Prepare ERs related to contractor works for BESS projects and ensure their implementation through regular auditing.
- Promote standardised BESS designs to reduce CAPEX and OPEX while establishing sound engineering standards, systems, and procedures for the engineering department.
- Collaborate with vendors, manufacturers, and internal teams to specify BESS equipment and drive technical solutions.
- Prepare and maintain clear documentation, including design specifications, white papers, schematics, diagrams, and reports.
- Evaluate electrical calculations and designs, including battery system layouts, PCS integration, control and protection systems, power system studies, earthing, LV distribution, general service design, and EMS functionality.
- Support the Grid team in reviewing System Operator requirements and addressing utility application standards.
- Identify gaps in scope and responsibility, ensuring comprehensive project understanding and stakeholder alignment for project success.
- Lead project ownership and execution, managing scope, stakeholders, and schedules while maintaining clear communication across internal and external teams.
- Participate in project meetings and engage with consultants, contractors, engineers, utilities, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate with Owner’s Engineer site engineers to address design-related issues during construction and commissioning.
- Attend site as required during the project lifecycle to oversee installation, testing, and commissioning, ensuring compliance with design specifications and resolving technical queries.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to junior engineers, coordinating their activities to produce high-quality designs on schedule.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Ideally 5-10 years of relevant experience as an Electrical/Project Engineer, preferably in BESS, renewables, or related fields.
- Proficiency in BESS electrical installations, ampacity calculations, short circuit/load flow studies, protective device coordination, arc flash analysis, grounding per IEEE 80, and other relevant design topics.
- Strong expertise in specifying, evaluating, and procuring BESS equipment as well as major electrical components such as switchgear and transformers.
- Experience in developing electrical construction drawing sets and supporting construction administration tasks (RFIs, Design Change Notices, as-builts).
- Expertise in controls, networking, SCADA systems, and CAD tools.
- Familiarity with renewables, PV systems, EPC project delivery, generation system design, and microgrids.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, with a strong work ethic and team-oriented mindset.
