🎯 Competency-Based Interviews

The dominant interview format in Ireland. Master the STAR method and 8 core competencies with sample answers.

Why this matters in Ireland: The majority of Irish employers — especially the public sector, banks, Big 4, pharma companies, and large multinationals — use competency-based interviews as their primary assessment method. Understanding this format is non-negotiable for job seekers in Ireland.

The STAR Method

S
Situation
Set the scene. Where, when, and what was happening?
~15% of answer
T
Task
What was your specific role or responsibility?
~15% of answer
A
Action
What did YOU specifically do? (most important)
~50% of answer
R
Result
What was the outcome? Quantify if possible.
~20% of answer
⚠️ Common mistake: 80% of candidates spend too long on Situation and not enough on Action. The interviewer wants to know what you personally did. Use "I" not "we". Keep Situation/Task to 2-3 sentences max, then spend the majority on your Actions.

8 Core Competencies

Leadership
Teamwork
Communication
Problem Solving
Initiative
Resilience
Planning
Customer Focus

🏆 Leadership & Influence

They're assessing: Can you motivate others, make decisions, take ownership, and drive results? This doesn't require a management title — leading a project, mentoring a colleague, or driving change all count.

Sample Questions

"Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation."
S "In Q3 2024, our product team at [Company] lost two senior engineers mid-sprint, putting a critical client delivery at risk."
T "As tech lead, I needed to restructure the team and ensure we still delivered on time."
A "I immediately reassessed priorities, identified which features were essential vs nice-to-have, and redistributed workload. I brought in a contractor within 48 hours through my network, personally pair-programmed with junior developers to accelerate their contribution, and held daily 15-minute standups to keep momentum. I also communicated transparently with the client about adjusted timelines for non-critical features."
R "We delivered the core product on time, the client renewed their contract (worth €180K annually), and two of the junior developers were subsequently promoted based on skills they developed during that period."
"Describe a situation where you had to influence people without having authority over them."

🤝 Teamwork & Collaboration

They're assessing: Can you work effectively with others, handle different perspectives, support colleagues, and contribute to collective goals?

Sample Questions

"Give an example of a time you worked successfully as part of a team to achieve a goal."
S "Our marketing team was tasked with launching a new product across 3 European markets in 6 weeks — half the normal timeline."
T "I was responsible for the Irish and UK market strategy and needed to coordinate with the design team in Berlin and sales in Paris."
A "I set up a shared Notion workspace with clear ownership per market, scheduled overlapping working hours for cross-timezone collaboration, and volunteered to handle the consolidated reporting to free up my colleagues. When the design team fell behind, I stepped in to create placeholder assets rather than waiting, which kept the project moving."
R "We launched on time across all 3 markets. The Irish campaign achieved 140% of its lead target in the first month, and the cross-team collaboration model we developed became the template for future launches."
"Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a colleague. How did you handle it?"

💬 Communication

Can you convey complex information clearly, adapt your style to different audiences, listen actively, and present persuasively?

Sample Questions

"Describe a time you had to explain something complex to a non-technical audience."
S "Our CFO needed to understand why we should migrate to a new cloud infrastructure — a €200K investment she was sceptical about."
T "As the solutions architect, I needed to build a business case in language that resonated with a finance audience."
A "I translated every technical benefit into financial impact: 'auto-scaling' became 'we only pay for what we use, saving €4K/month'. I created a one-page visual showing current vs proposed costs over 3 years, and I invited the CFO to see a live demo rather than relying on slides. I prepared for her likely objections and had answers ready."
R "She approved the budget that week. The migration saved €52K in the first year — actually exceeding my projections. She later cited it as 'the clearest tech proposal she'd ever received.'"

🧩 Problem Solving & Analysis

Can you identify issues, gather information, analyse options, and implement effective solutions? Irish employers love structured thinking.

Sample Questions

"Tell me about a complex problem you solved at work."
"Describe a time you used data to make a decision."

🚀 Initiative & Drive

Do you take ownership beyond your job description? Can you identify opportunities and act on them without being told?

Sample Questions

"Give an example of when you went above and beyond what was expected."
"Tell me about a time you identified an improvement and made it happen."

💪 Resilience & Adaptability

How do you handle pressure, setbacks, change, and ambiguity? Especially relevant post-pandemic.

Sample Questions

"Describe a time you had to adapt to a significant change at work."
"Tell me about a time you received difficult feedback. How did you respond?"

📋 Planning & Organisation

Can you manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and organise resources effectively?

Sample Questions

"Tell me about a time you managed multiple competing deadlines."
"Describe a project you planned from start to finish."

👥 Customer / Stakeholder Focus

Can you understand needs, manage expectations, deliver excellent service, and handle complaints?

Sample Questions

"Give an example of exceeding a customer's expectations."
"Tell me about a time you handled a difficult stakeholder."

How Interviewers Score You

Most Irish employers use a 1-4 or 1-5 scoring matrix per competency:

1
No Evidence
Couldn't provide a relevant example
2
Basic
Example given but lacked depth or results
3
Strong
Clear STAR, good detail, measurable results
4
Exceptional
Outstanding example with significant impact
